Dozens of countries across the world have either effectively shut down its borders or restricted the entry of certain nationalities into their country in light of the widespread outbreak of COVID-19. As the disease has now been classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), there is hardly appetite for countries to risk importing fresh cases of the disease into their territory. Yet, with cases of local community transmission now recorded in many countries—some prior to the closing of the border—one has to question the effectiveness of travel restriction.
